1 Block off the Grid – 1BOG - is a community-based initiative to
drive wider solar energy adoption through education, private financing
and community purchase programs. Our objective is to take one entire
city block off-the-grid* in San Francisco and make us the leader with
the highest renewable energy use in the US. The 1BOG initiative removes
cost as the primary hurdle to broader solar adoption by:
- negotiating bulk-purchase pricing with solar providers and local installers, and
- providing substantial subsidies from private sponsors.
We also help neighbors organize and form “solar communities” in
their districts. 1BOG provides all the information and materials on
technology, rebates and incentives, and current legislation so that
residents can understand solar, assess if it’s right for them, and
share the information with their neighbors.
The 1BOG removes cost as the primary hurdle to wider solar adoption
by providing substantial subsidies, logistical support and information.
We help neighbors join forces and organize to install solar panels on a
large number of roofs – and significantly reduce the overall cost
through bulk-purchase pricing. By combining community purchasing with
Federal, California and San Francisco solar incentives, and some level
of private funding the cost of “going solar” becomes extremely
attractive.
1BOG Goals
- Provide immediate, widespread, subsidized solar Photovoltaic systems to San Francisco residences.
- Generate widespread awareness of solar options and benefits.
- Accelerate adoption of solar electricity solutions to bringing San
Francisco to the forefront of cities with highest solar energy use.
- Help meet and exceed San Francisco’s goal of 10,000 solar homes by 2010.
There has never been a better time to “go solar”. The incentives are
shrinking and panel prices keep rising. Sign up now to join the SF
solar community!
